Our Honey & The Buzz About Bees

Our honey is harvested from bees right here in Scott County, and much of it is harvested from hives right here on our farm.  So, when we say that the honey sold at Bi-Water Farm & Greenhouse is locally harvested, we really mean it!!

Below are some facts pertaining to honey bees, and information about how hard those little rascals work to gather honey.

• Honeybees are the only insects that produce food for humans.
• One hive contains approximately 40-45 thousand bees.
• During honey production season, a bee’s life span is only 6 weeks.
• A bee travels an average 1600 round trips in order to produce one ounce of honey (as far as 6 miles per round trip). To produce 2 pounds of honey, bees travel a distance equal to 4 times around the earth.
• Bees fly an average of 13-15 miles per hour.
• One bee usually visits between 50 & 1,000 flowers per day.
• Queens will lay approximately 2,000 eggs per day at the rate of 5 or 6 a minute.
• The average temperature of a hive is 93.5 degrees Fahrenheit.
• In the course of her lifetime, a worker bee will produce 1/12th of a teaspoon of honey.
• In a single collecting trip, a worker bee will return to the hive carrying over half her weight in pollen and nectar.
• One honeycomb cell in a hive contains approximately .01oz of honey when full.
• One honeybee can only fill about 15 cells in her short life.
