Where is Your Sun?

Before you begin planting anything--- annuals, perennials, trees or shrubs--- you must know where your sun is located on your yard. Without this information, it is impossible to determine what plants can be planted in your location.

There are certain plants that can, and do require shade condition during the hot hours of the day. But the same plant may require sun during morning or late afternoon.

If the location in your yard where you want to plant a flower is shielded by the structure of your house, and never receives sun all day, then it is best to adjust your planting desires with a plant that can handle the total shade. In other words, you must make your plant selection fit the light location. Do not allow your desire for a certain plant out weigh the requirements of the plant.

For the good of the plant, always make sure you know how much sun is on your planting area. Keep a record of it one day. Is the sun hitting the area at 8:00 am? What about noon? What about 3:00 pm? What about 6:00pm? With this information in hand, then go to the garden center and make an intelligent decision as to what kind of plant to buy.
